A Bit About Joey Cabral
Son of the late Irving and Dottie Cabral, Joey Cabral, aka “Smokin' Joe,” passed away in a hit-and-run accident in Sacramento on a beautiful spring night. He was 54. Joey spent most of his life in Santa Clara where he loved spending time at the Carmelite’s, Franklin Mall, and Fremont Park. His dad taught him at an early age that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and Joey was always creating art with the items he found. Joey spent his childhood helping his dad with the Santa Clara flea market, clean-up drive and disabled war veteran’s thrift shop. He always had a radio nearby tuned to rock n’ roll. He loved singing the blues on his harmonica. He had a strong connection to mother nature and was content laying in the shade of a tree listening to the birds sing. Although homeless, he survived by being resilient, resourceful and creative. He was one of Sacramento’s great characters and his soft knock, smile, and sky blue sparkling eyes will be missed by all who knew him.
